Dundee United have secured their first league win of the season with a hard-fought victory over Motherwell at Dens Park on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute through a well-taken goal from James Tavernier, but Dundee fought back and equalised just before half-time through a strike from Scott Brown.

In the second half, Dundee continued to dominate and were rewarded for their efforts when Scott McDonald scored his first goal for the club in the 77th minute. The victory was Dundee's first since November 1996 and marks a huge step forward in their campaign.

Manager Derek McInnes praised his team's determination and work rate, saying: "It was a tough game and we had to fight for every ball."

"We showed a lot of character and resilience today," he added. "We've worked very hard this week and it paid off today. It's a big boost for us and we're looking forward to the next game."

For Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson, he said: "We didn't create enough chances and we couldn't take them when we did. We'll be disappointed not to get something out of the game."

"It was disappointing not to pick up anything against such a strong team like Dundee," he added. "But we'll take the positives from today and move on."
